Looking for Help Regarding Overclocking and Benchmarking Software

I have never overclocked before, but I am looking to do so.

Here is my build:
Processor: i7 4790k @ 4.00 GHz
Motherboard: GA-G1.SNIPER Z97 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill - Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2133 Memory
GPU: MSI - GeForce GTX 970 4GB 100 Million Edition Video Card
PSU: Corsair - RM 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

I know almost nothing about the more technical details of overclocking, but what could I do with this setup? Are there any specific programs I can use to overclock and/or tell me how much I can overclock? I want to know how hard I can push my components SAFELY. If you do reply to this thread, I ask that you put things in lame-man's terms for me. Thanks.

you do the OC directly from your BIOS Setup, about how hard you can push, it depends on the silicon lottery at your side, every chip is different.

and youre goona need a high end cooling system for the OC, as it tends to get higher temps the higher you overclock it

You need to hasve control of CPU speed, either multiplier or FSB. You also need to have control of Voltage.
If you raise the speed 10% the CPU is doing more work so 10% more cooling is needed.
If you raise the Voltage 20% that's more heat, and the speed 20% then 1.20X1.20= 1.44 you need 44% more cooling.
So if you want the best result then you start with the best cooling you can get. As long as you stay within reasonable limits on Voltaage and temperature you shouldn't damage anything. Intel publishes these limits in the CPU specs. so that's a good place to start.
