I just recently went back to windows 7 from windows 10 because i hated it. was the first i had messed with my os in a long time. I have the following specs:
MOBO: MSI 760GM-E51
CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 640
GPU: EVGA GTX 970
I had installed the most recent nvidia drivers for my gpu, and the audio doesn't work.
I tried installing Realtek Audio drivers that were "compatible" with my motherboard and audio doesn't work. I am at a loss. I have gone into device manager and sound devices and searched online for updated driver but it says i have current drivers. I can't figure anything out. I remember when i first bought this PC, the previous owner had an AMD Radeon GPU in it and oddly enough the audio didn't work when i fresh installed windows then as well, UNLESS i installed the AMD Catalyst stuff with the CD. Tried all online drivers w/ no success. I don't have my disk for the gtx 970 anymore, but surely that cannot be the problem.

The default playback device may have simply been changed to nVidia HD Audio device instead of your speakers, so it's sending the audio to the HDMI port instead. The previous Radeon would have had an AMD HD Audio device for each HDMI port too.

The confusion arises because PCs nowadays often have multiple sound "cards" in them and it's up to you to select the one you are using.
