Gt 1030, gtx 1050, or gtx 1050ti. make sure the ti has no extra power connectors.
these cards will not required a PSU upgrade, however I suggest one soon.
I doubt he has a phenom x6 in there so the 1050ti is about the fastest GPU I suggest

His build is really old. He had a GT 220 ddr2 running. And his CPU is an AMD athlom II x4 635 2.90 ghz, old stuff too. Wouldn't those cards bottleneck hard with it? He has two sticks of 2gb ram ddr3 each.

I think I'll recommend him the gt 1030, he doesn't wan't to spend too much money. My question is: should he get a ddr5 gpu (gt 1030) or aim for an old ddr3? Considering how old his pc is, installing something that is technologically more advanced, makes me think that perhaps he will have perfomance issues?.. just wondering

I'll write down the specs again, so maybe you can help me better:

PSU: atx biswall 500W
MOTHERBOARD: M4N68T-M LE V2
CPU: amd athlom II x4 635 2.90 ghz
RAM: 2x2GB ddr3 Kingston
CASE: generic (consider its dimensions maybe? but not so relevant he can upgrade)

My personal view on the issue is get the best card you can now. the system is old but chances are better that he will reuse the card in a new system before replacing the card again on that system.

The GPU is a computer system on a card, it has a CPU, RAM and the OS is whatever game its running. the DDR3 of the system does not care or interact directly with the GDDR5/DDR3/DDR4 on the GPU.

Ok, ill tell him that. Thank you. Did you check the connectors from the PSU? (it will have no issues connecting to the gpu right?)
