Getting very low FPS on FIFA 18. What might be the problem?

Hello everybody!

I'm experiencing a very frustrating and upsetting FPS downgrade on FIFA 18. Strange thing is, despite the graphic settings i choose, it will run VERY laggily and FPS will get no more than 10-20 when I play. I've tried both playing with my display's natural resolution (1360x768) and with a 2.00 DSR (which makes it a 1923x1086 resolution, in which I play most of my games nowadays); I've both tried unabling Anti-Aliasing and Rendering options, and setting them to multiple factors (2x,4x, High, Low, Medium, Ultra, all which you may think of); I've both played with ''Lock on 60 FPS'' and "No FPS limit" configurations. Nevertheless, setting it any possible way, I won't get more than that few and sad FPS :( .

What makes it odder is that I can perfectly play games like GTA V or Metro: Last Light at Ultra Settings and at 1923x1086 (DSR 2x enabled) very smoothly, at 60+ FPS. And, even odder than it, I've a friend of mine who is playing FIFA 18 at 1200x800 and High settings with an i3 (not very new, i guess its 6th generation), a R9 270 and the same RAM as me, and he is getting a smooth and normal performance.

My current specs are:

-AMD Phenom II X4 960T (may this be doing a kind of bottleneck and downgrading the FPS abruptly)
-Zotac GeForce GTX 960 2GB
-8GB DDR3 GSkill Sniper RAM at 1600 MHz

What may be causing it? I've just updated my GPU's drivers to the latest, tried optimizing the game and all of that kind of stuff.

Please, as soon as you can, would you help me? I'm desperate to find it out.
Thanks a lot!! Best regards

cpu thermal throttling would create the issues you describe

its odd only one game is affected for you though

make sure you dont have a miner malware, your copy is legal right?

monitor cpu temps while you play

Hi maxalge, thanks for answering. I've monitored them, and they get to 50-60 °C (120-140 °F). This ID while I play; when i close the game, it decreases

yes, amd cpu's start to thermal throttle at ~60 degrees

you need to make sure the cpu cooler has functional fans and is installed properly

maybe also need new thermal paste, or a new better cooler altogether

@maxalge (sorry to quote you this way, can't do it any other way :/ ), could that really be the way yo solve it?? Igual thought the continuous lag would ve because my cpu is old and may be doing some bottleneck.

As well, what should i do? Shall I put some thermal paste or cooler on it? Or shall i upgrade my cpu (i was thinking of buying an i5 or something similar soon)

Thanks for your answers!!

@maxalge I know, but i didnt know 60-70°C would be considered Thermal throttling. That's what gets me even more confused; any game runs fine, but not FIFA. And yes, i have bought the game via Origin

Dear maxalge and Kasper Jorgensen. I've just solved it!! It was indeed thermal throttling. After measuring my temps with HWMonitor during different runs along the day, I found out my CPU was at about 43ºC when idle (109ºF) and at 71ºC (158ºF) while playing; at every moment, my GPU remained at 50ºC (122ºF), even after playing. Later today, i decided to clean up my PC tower because I found out I had my CD/DVD reader-writer (a problem solved with another problem :D ), and saw it too dirty inside (guess I hadn't untidied it for like 3-4 years, for real). All i did was spray some compressed air and removed as much dust and dirt as I could.

And then voilá! My CPU came back to be 25ºC (77ºF) while idle and 41ºC (105ºF) after playing a whole FIFA 18 match. I even played at High settings and a 1923x1086 resolution (DSR 2.0 enabled), setted with "No FPS limit" and DirectX11 (i have Windows 7 btw), as well as Adaptive V-Sync set on from the 3D settings from NVidia Control Panel (I had done this all before, but i guess the dust removal solved it finally). So, thank you very much for your help, because indeed it was the high CPU temp and its overwhelming dust that couldn't make it work comfortably.

Cheers to all of you!
