I recently built a pc with a Rx 480 gpu. It has been working fine for a couple of months but when I decided to update my drivers it gave me and error and said something like the package is only partially installed general error 1603. So then I searched up solutions for this error and so far nothing has worked. Also my gpu also does not show up in device manager or speccy and instead comes up with Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. So now I cannot play games as the drivers don't work. This has gone on for a couple of days now and help would be appreciated.

PS.
Something else i noticed is that when i check the log of the failed installation everything comes up with installation success except for amd display driver which comes up with fail.

If you've tried everything in the link as well as what I added, then I would err towards a faulty graphics card. As a final check, install to a different PCIe lane (if available) or a different working PC (if available) just to confirm the graphics card does work properly.

Others may yet have suggestions I've overlooked.
Is it this error?

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/834484/you-receive-an-error-1603-a-fatal-error-occurred-during-installation-e

If so, there are suggestions there to help.

I'll be pedantic and suggest checking the monitor cable is plugged into the graphics card (ignored twice on this point and it was the problem for that user). Consider also reseating the graphics card. Clean installation of drivers. Check show hidden devices in Device Manager; if it still doesn't show there's a possibility the graphics card is faulty.

That's all I can think of.

I have done all of above except for installation of drivers, but like it said it won't allow me (general error 1603 amd display driver failed install).

Okay so I have struggled for at least a day with this. The solution turned out to be really simple. Go to device manager, your GPU most likely shows up in display adapters as "MIcrosoft Basic DIsplay Adapter", right click, update driver software. Then manually navigate to C:/AMD/packages/drivers, this is where your driver installation packages get saved by default. Select something like: Radeon-Crimson-ReLive-17.4.4-cu313747-win8.1-64bit-170504_drvWHQL(.exe) and device manager will do the rest for you :)

P.S. Don't forget to disable all GPU applications such as youtube while installing!!!
P.P.S I also recommend wiping your drivers clean with DDU in safe mode beforehand!
