Hi all, last week my dell Inspiron n5010 laptop running Windows 7 home premium , would refuse to boot( startup repair loop), .. scanning hardware came up with HDD error 142.
Now since then have taken the drive out connected to another computer and funny I can see and copy all the data . Now Iam in two minds.
Should I stick the same drive back, and do a factory reset or order a new HDD?
Any help/suggestions?

Solution

Couldn't download from Microsoft as it always gives error.
Upon further reading online figured out...

If your data is of value, back it up.
Before re-using the drive, it is best to run a thorough diagnostic (usually takes several hours) to be sure it is stable. Most manufacturers have their own diagnostic software you can download and run.
If you aren't 100% sure that you can trust the drive and can afford to do so, play it safe and replace it.

"...Now since then have taken the drive out connected to another computer and funny I can see and copy all the data..." And, did you copy all your data folders and files onto reliable external media as Dr_Luke suggested?

Hi all, I have received my new HDD today. Now how do I go about installing windows again. Original hdd came with windows 7 home premium 64 bit . I still have the windows key but not sure which installer to download i.e
Windows 7 home premium sp1 or Windows 7 home premium sp1 COEM.. ..?

See https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7 and download the Win 7 Media Creation Tool. You'll be able to use a DVD or USB flash drive to fresh-install the Win 7 OS. Have your Product ID (license #) handy.

Upon further reading online figured out the problem.
Laptop came with SLP , ..
Downloaded windows from the link given by dell advisor and ACTIVATED using OEM SLP backup.

Glad to hear you finally were able to download the Win 7 OS installation files. I had completely forgotten about the Dell OEM System Locked Preinstallation (SLP) key for Win 7 that required the Win 7 OS installation files to be downloaded via the OEM. Good work.
