My thoughts:
A server is still a computer. However it may contain software and hardware that makes it more efficient, faster, secure... whatever at some designated task or dedicated purpose.
For example: print servers with a printer or printers attached. Or a database server with multiple drives.
What OS (Operating System) is installed? That is the core of it all. What applications and tools are installed on the server?
Overall, there is nothing magical about the "server" designation. Learn as much as you can about the existing hardware, software, and configuration.
Then decide how you wish to use the server. What are your requirements?
Plan a "Where I am" to "Where I want to be" matrix. Then figure out the possible ways to do so.
Overall, I would hope that the server's specifications exceed the requirements of any hardware or software you may wish to run.
If so, thank your friend.
