Hi I am considering upgrading my system to allow me to play games at 4k. Below are my current system stats:

CPU : i5-3570K overclocked to 4.2ghz (watercooled)
Memory : 16gb DDR3 1600
Video : Radeon R9-280X with 3gb memory
Monitor : Monoprice 27" 4k
HD : 3x 512gb SSD's + 1x 4 TB HD

So the question is should I

- Upgrade to the latest Coffee Lake CPU
- Upgrade to a GTX 1070 or 1080
- Upgrade BOTH
- Do nothing right now

The CPU is the least desired because it means new cpu, new motherboard and new memory. But I am open to whatever. Budget wise I can afford all of them but want to be smart about it. I don't claim to be an expert but I have read a bit about video cards being inflated right now because of currency mining (whatever that is...I read about it but still don't understand it).

Thanks

If you want to game at 4K your current CPU should be fine. I would suggest upgrading your GPU if that's what you want to do. With the rumor of the GTX 1070 Ti releasing soon, I'd say wait until then or just go ahead and get the GTX 1080 because the 1070 Ti will be in high demand and you might miss out and be waiting even longer or have to pay 1080 prices.

As of right now the GTX 1080 is at a lower price point than when it was released, while the GTX 1070 is slightly higher in price than when released.

If you can afford it though the GTX 1080 Ti would be best for 4K gaming.

What power supply do you have?

I'd suggest wait until late November and then upgrade the GPU to a 1070Ti or better. Waiting until November has it's benefits as the Ether mining craze is finally dying down and prices are due to drop. The 1070Ti will drop the prices on most of Nvidia's higher end lineup. And lastly, November usually has some great sales.

Additional tip: EVGA has a B-Stock site where they sell refurbished cards (I've never had a bad one from them) and if you keep an eye out, you can get some great deals with a warranty included (better then buying secondhand from CL or EBay)
