Best Wireless Setup Large House?

Hey all! I'm recently moved in with 4 other housemates, and even though I'm fairly tech savvy, I need some advice for the best setup in our house. On top of there being more people, I live downstairs, away from the router.

I currently have my own Netgear R6400 Router hooked up in AP mode to our network-provided Arris AC Router/Modem combo. I have a faster, newer Netgear CM500 modem sitting around if that helps.

So my question is: With all the hardware listed, what would be the best setup so that we all get service, even while I'm downstairs. Thanks!

Solution
If you want better speeds downstairs, since you can't run an Ethernet cable, use a pair of good powerline adapters (AV2-1200 like the TP-Link TL-PL8030. You can then either use a direct cable connection or attach a router to it and configure as an AP.

Getting a good signal upstairs should be fairly easy since all the radios are up there, just insure that they are set to use different 2.4GHz channels (selecting from 1, 6, and 11) and the 5GHz channels don't matter since only the R6400 supports that. Do divide up the connections by having everyone coordinate what wireless they choose to connect on.

Your CM500 won't help as it is just a modem and you already have a modem/router combo that provides a radio for coverage in that area.

I assume that you use either an Ethernet cable or pair of PL adapters to attach your R6400 in close proximity to your location and the Arris covers the main floor or no are both sitting near one another?

A good description of the layout of the users relative to the two radios would help (sketch out a floor plan) and describe the main uses (gaming, streaming, surfing, and hopefully not torrents as those eat all the bandwidth) for each.

Also, is the Arris an older 2.4HGz only device? You can manage radio frequency use for the R6400 by naming its SSIDs for the frequencies (like Wireless2_4 and Wireless_5 or Wireless_AC) then each choose to balance the load. Insure that the two devices use different non-overlapping 2.4GHz channels.

Anyone near the Arris should connect by cable if possible to free up wireless bandwidth.

Thank you for the fast response! I can't sketch it out, but I can describe it to my best ability.

The Router/Modem combo is an AC Arris unit, that is hooked up in the upstairs utility room. Connected to one of the back ports on the Arris is an ethernet cable connecting to my R6400, which is sitting next to it in AP mode. There are 4 roommates upstairs, they mostly browse netflix or do light gaming. I am the only person living downstairs, and I do moderate gaming and streaming, but suffer from lag/disconnect issues. I've read of some suggestions on this forum such as making a bridge, or as you suggested to manage the frequencies coming out. One last thing is that unfortunately, we have no working ethernet ports in the house, with that said I'm willing to get my hands dirty in the router settings to get this working. Thank you!
