it may have just died on it's own. Sometimes they can run hot and could cook themselves. it doesn't really "work" harder ever. downloading doesn't make it work harder or anything, it's always working at the same constant rate.

Yeah I thought the same when it stopped working so I started feeling it but it didn't feel that warm at all

Replace it - - be sure to follow installation instructions carefully - - usually you have to start installing the driver software first, and don't plug in the adapter until you see the on-screen prompt telling you to do so.
Of course, if you buy the exact same model you should be able to plug it in straight away - - it should work if drivers from previous adapter (same model) have not been removed.
