I'm going to be upgrading my cpu here soon. I'm wondering if I should go with an I5 or I7, I only game at 1080p but I want 60fps and high settings. My current gpu is a gtx 1050 ti. There is about an $80-90 price difference so I would love some opinions. I have a 500w psu and 16gb ram if that helps.

What is your budget? While I agree a i7 might be a bit more then what you need you might be able to find a 6700/7700 used for a good price and that would be a substantial upgrade over your current i3 and would last at least a few years.

Depends on the cpu. If you are leaning towards CoffeeLake, I'd go with the i5, 6c/6t is plenty to accommodate any of today's games. If you are looking at kabylake, then I'd definitely go i7, as the 4c/4t i5 is suffering limitations on some games now, and that number will increase. The i7 enjoys all the same IPC as the i5, with the added bonus of the HT threads for higher thread optimized gaming.

windows 10
Core i3 7100
gtx 1050 ti
16gb ram
1tb hdd
500w psu

I'm only going for Kaby/Skylake processors and the NON k variants, I don't plan on overclocking.

Why don't you want coffee lake? is it because you want more mobo options than high end z370 with coffee lake? because i5 8400 is priced really well compared to kaby/skylake and you can get like the asus tuf series z370 for pretty cheap...? i think the 8400 beter than the 7700
