Is an AMD Ryzen 1600x just a 1600 with factory overclocking..?

What's the diff? 1600x has .4 GHz per core, yet they're the same chip and all that. Is there anything special about the x that can make it withstand the extra GHz? Anything? I'm on an extreme budget and I know the x version is only ~20$ more, but if I can just overclock the 1600 with the stock cooler I might as well do that instead (right..?)

No real need to run Prime95 for that long, IMO...it will heat a cpu thoroughly in 10-15 minutes...; the 24 hour runs are silly, frankly...

And the temps attained with Prime95 are 10-15C above what are achieved in gaming anyway, so, are not really relevant except to prove the cooling is adequate for Prime, which is not truly necessary or interesting to 99.9% of the populace...

r5-1600's factory cooler is certainly adequate for intermediate OC (3.8-3.9 GHz) and routine gaming loads....
On an "extreme budget", the 1600 is probably the better choice, particularly if you are willing to overclock. They are more or less the same. AMD likely does select better overclocking chips to go with the higher clocked parts, but the differences should be minor. And more importantly, the 1600 comes with a decent stock cooler that's capable of a fair amount of overclocking, while the 1600X does not, and you'll need to supply your own cooler.

Yep, the bundled Wraith Spire cooler is one of the best bundled CPU coolers around, it won't handle extreme overclocks but 3.7GHz shouldn't stress it too much, besides, the current Ryzen parts tend to max out at <>3,9-4GHz anyway so overclocking on the bundled cooler is very doable, just keep a close eye on the temperatures.

A close eye on temps?

You mean stressing the CPU at 100% for a good 30 minutes and seeing the peak temp?

Is that a good way to know if you've overclocked too much...?

Also side-question, what is a good temp? (in F)
