If you're just using a 1080 and not the ti does the 8600k make sense for 1440p? or is 8400 a much better scenario?

I'm thinking of making the purchase next year when the cheaper motherboards are out. But when I pick then it'd be nice to know if theres any point to that much cpu power. seems like for 1440p if you dont have a 1080 ti the 8400 is the better choice.

please comment on these parts only plz.

Depends. If it's 1440p @60Hz, cpu requirements are considerably less than 1440p @144Hz.

On the flip side, the i5-8400 is a locked cpu, so if there's any desire to get some OC, your stuck. It not being a matter of performance, but user wants. At stock settings there's not that much difference between the 2 cpus, but for some, the lack of OC ability is a deal breaker.

I would get the i7 8700K as it is the top of the line for the socket and they just tend to age so much better than any i5. Also there is a chance that z370 and the LGA 1551 "V2" will only be able to use Coffee Lake cpu's (Cannon Lake and or Tiger Lake might work but hard telling as PCI-e 4.0 and DDR-5 is coming sooner or later...) So spend the extra on a cpu now and then you won't have a paper weight cpu later and have to search for a compatible i7 later on..
