Should I switch between the boards and the CPUs?

Hi guys!

My father is bringing home a PC he had in work. It has 6 RAM slots and an Intel i7-920.

My mobo has 4 Ram slots, with i5-2400.

Now, I have 4x2GB RAM installed on my motherboard and I'm planning to buy another 2x4GB sticks.

So the dilemma is - should I use the 6 slotted board to get 16GB RAM, or should I stick to the i5 CPU with only 12GB RAM?

The PC is used mostly for gaming, and I must say that 8GB is not enough anymore.

I'm afraid that 12GB won't be enough either for games like Just Cause 3 which crashes right now with 8GB.

First of all - mixing ram sets is a bad idea. It may or may not work, and if it does run - expect problems to happen.
And I don't think that RAM is the bottleneck in your build: the i7 is 9 years old and the i5 is 6 years old. The i5 should be better in gaming based on its clocks, not to mention that it's less power demanding.

It's also worth noting that these CPUs don't support DDR4 RAM. So if you bought some DDR3 RAM anyways, after some time you will probably want to upgrade your CPU making them unusable (unless you pick something like 4th gen i5 which are among the last fully supporting DDR3 memory).

All in all - If I were in your shoes I would stick to the i5 and to 4x2GB RAM.
