RAM: 8gb

MOTHERBOARD:msi b85m-e45 (ms-7817)

GPU:GTX 960 sc 2gb

POWER SUPPLY:650 wat
so yeah im new its a pretty good rig im new and dont know what to do but i want to upgrade to a

Intel Core i7 6700K

does my mother board support it and can my rig have enough power or will it overheat or not work? thank you to anyone reading this:)

Solution

Yes it will handle the power, but i will still recommend to upgrade in the future.

For high quality something like Corsair RM550x or EVGA G2 or G3 550w
For lower but still decent quality, something like Corsair TX or CXm lineup or Seasonic M12II
You will need new motherboard and new DDR4 RAM as well, if you are gonna upgrade to 6700K. Also consider a 8600K or 8700K instead.
For your PSU, what is the exact and full model? 650w is enough but if it's a crap quality i would upgrade that as well,

ok it's corsair VS 650 and it the ac input is 200v-240v
Most of my savings is on a new monitor but all my budget is going on the CPU and motherboard. No case

Do I need ram I already have 8gb and intel core i7 goes for around 400$ I can mabye stretch my budget to 550$ that leaves enough money fo a decent mobo

Your current RAM is DDR3 and will not work with the newer systems as they use DDR4. So yes you will need new RAM.

This is the best I can find for now with an Intel system

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i5-8400 2.8GHz 6-Core Processor ($279.00 @ Scorptec)
Motherboard: ASRock - Z370 Pro4 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($179.00 @ Umart)
Memory: G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2666 Memory ($123.98 @ Mwave Australia)
Total: $581.98

Also you could wait until January when the cheaper B360 mobos becomes available and that should get you closer to your budget. But you are not getting a K CPU within that budget.
