I'm planning to upgrade my CPU. Right now I have 4690k. I don't know if I should buy 8400 and save some money or go for the 8600k. My 4690k served me well for over 2 years. I want my new CPU to last at least 3 years. I heard the base clock don't matter at all, but what m curios about is OC on 8600k and if I later could squeeze more juice out of it.

Solution

Then the 8600K will serve you better.
You should be able to get a 8600K to 5 GHz with a decent mobo. The 8400 is a good choice also, but until the cheaper B360 mobos will be released in January you will still need the more expensive Z370 mobos.
Either way, they should both last you the next 3 years. Personally I would go for the 8600K out of the 2, but that is your choice and depends if you wanna overclock.

Is there a big difference between 8400 and OC 8600k? I really don't like going crazy with overclocks.
