i5-7400+GTX1080 @ 1440p/144hz?

I bought a pre-build earlier in year. I do not want to replace Mobo (B250), etc. (originally a 1080p gaming machine, but now I want to play 1440p games).

My CPU is a (4c/4t) i5-7400. I recently bought a 144hz 1440p freesync Display. My RX 480 4g struggles on 1440p gameplay.

I just ordered a gtx1080 A8g Card...

My mobo restricts my CPU upgrade path to an i7-7700, non-k, because the mobo is locked/not OC compatible. Cheapest price for that CPU is $265, not worth it if I’m only gaining 5fps.

So i would rather keep my i5-7400 (for now, until i7-7700 drops to $150) If it will pair ok w/ gtx1080 @ 1440p.

Soooo....Will my i5-7400 CPU bottleneck the performance of gtx1080card @ 1440p gameplay??

You can use a 7700k, you just won't be able to overclock it. Will it "bottleneck" (I hate this word so much) at 1440p at 144hz? Maybe a bit in some games, but it's not going to ruin the experience. Just play games and don't worry about it, if there's something that you're discontent with then cross that bridge when you come to it.

thanks for the response, i found it to be helpful.. I will def just see how things play out with the i5-7400 & the soon to arrive GTX 1080 card on my 1440p display.

As far as possible CPU upgrades, if I decide to go for the 7700K (instead of non-k), could I use the current fan that i'm using on the i5-7400? My PSU is thermatake 600w.

You technically could but I wouldn't, there are plenty of cheap air coolers that do a much better job. 7700k doesn't come with a stock cooler but has a 300MHz higher boost clock, which would give you a bit more speed. If they're only separated by $30 or so I'd get the K both for performance and resale values, K processors are in much higher demand.

Great to know! I'll most likely just start searching Ebay for a 7700K and just re-use the stock CPU fan that came installed on my B250 from CyberpowerPC.

My fear of swapping CPU's and/or installing fans is that I've never done that before. I have buillt a PC just once, but it was long ago in 2007 and the mobo came with CPU already installed.. so I literally have no idea how to use thermapaste, install fans, etc.

Luckily, 10 years has past and now youtube is a thing... so i guess i'll look up some how-to-videos on "swapping CPU's" and "upgrading stock cpu fans".

I appreciate the help so far.
