Hi all,

I'm in the market for a new monitor and just saw that ASUS has a promotion on certain monitors in which they give you AC Origins when you buy one.

Now, I've been thinking of switching to 1440p for a while now...

Have to choose between one of these 3 monitors (each of them is 27" 1440p from ASUS, prices are from the site that I'll be ordering from)

ASUS MG279Q
IPS, 144Hz, 4ms, no G sync
€599

ASUS ROG SWIFT PG278QR
TN, 144Hz, 1ms, G sync
€ 679

ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q
IPS, 144Hz, 1ms, G sync
€ 799

My setup at the moment contains a GTX 1080, right now I'm gaming on a 24" 144Hz 1ms 1080p TN panel.
I use it for gaming, sometimes FPS games, but mostly RPG's and newest AAA titles.

Is IPS worth it, is G sync worth it? (considering the prices)

If you aren't having any smoothness issues, stuttering issues, fps drops, then you don't need gsync. But I can't speak from personal experience as I have yet to own it. If you haven't owned ips before, you should try it. Or just go straight to va when they eventually release a 1440p 144hz monitor. I'm still waiting for that because I don't want to compromise.

That dell is the same price as the mg in euros. Contrast, color and gamut is a bit worse. It's pretty much tn+gsync vs ips+no gsync. At the same price, I'd choose ips over tn. Plus you'd lose out on the whole deal with asus.

True, I'm planning on keeping the monitor for years.
Is going from TN to IPS worth the extra € 120?
I can afford it, but € 800 is a lot of money for a monitor, to me.

Only you can decide if the picture is worth the extra money but I have seen a few IPS monitors in person such as the Acer X34 and the picture is absolutely stunning which is part of the reason it's a $1,000 monitor lol. For Gsync I hear it's well worth the price as it will keep the FPS smooth even if it drops during heavy gameplay. And I feel like 1440P/144+ gaming is perfect right now considering the hardware that's out, I wouldn't be surprised if this monitor lasted at least 7+ years without needing to be upgraded..

You can't compare a $1000 monitor vs a $600 one. You have to compare the models in question and not even panel type either because ips vs ips can be night and day. In this case, the differences from the 278 and 279 are small. People always want to say ips is better colors but pro reviews are showing the accuracy and gamut are too similar here. The main difference is contrast and the 279 is 100:1 more which is noticeable but it also has the infamous ips glow. To me, that ruins any dark scenes and the higher contrast but that will be affected by your room lighting. Viewing angles, to me, is negligible but I'm sure we all know that difference.

But the big questions, is it worth it? In a darker room, no because the ips glow will result in a worse experience. In a brighter room, that's a bit harder to decide. € 120 is relatively small for some and big for others but as far as looks go, contrast is king (as long as color isn't complete trash). Although some people may not care or notice while gaming, those of us who do, will enjoy the difference. If you can forgo gsync, the mg is the obvious choice for value but it looks like you want gsync.

I play in a semi-dark room.
So if I understand correctly my choice would be between the MG279Q and the PG278QR?

I've never compared G-sync to no-G-sync in real life.
At the moment I have a non G-sync monitor but I'm playing at 1080p 144Hz.

I'm just wondering, if I don't get G-sync, will I regret it?
Will I "need" it with a GTX 1080 in 1440p? Will I "need" it in the future? Is it better to spend an extra € 180 (MG279Q vs PG278QR) now?
