From what I understand, the i7 processors are all quad core. However, my laptop (Lenovo 910) has an i7 7500U processor and only seems to have 2 cores and 4 threads. I verified this with CPU-Z after noticing I was only running 2 cores. Turns out I only have 2 cores. Why is this? How is this better than an i5 if it only has 2 cores?

Solution
Not all i7 are quad cores. There are 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 core versions. As for as laptops, there's 2, 4 and soon to be 6 core versions. Most have a Q for quad core but some don't like the X and K and the newest 8th gen U. It's always best to check specs. i3, i5, i7 and i9 are only relevant to comparing the same series, in this case, U cpus of the 7th gen. It's better than an i5 of the series because of the ghz. It was never about core count. But still it's just marketing so shouldn't be really cared about. A name is a marketing tool used to sell and in this case, it succeeded flawlessly.

Solution

Always check specs before buying. There are various mobile i7 models with different core count.
