Hi guys....
I have a very old computer (2002 acer aspire desktop) i'm pressing back into service for a few months while i assemble components for a new build. The problem is i'm trying to update to windows 10 (mainly for web security as it is running xp) and when i try to get into bios to get it to boot from usb for the update it crashes.

What i mean by that is when i press any of the bios function keys, it says "loading setup....." for example, then the monitor says no signal..... the computer stays powered up in a simple form with the fan running, but pressing the start button on the case turns it off immediately, whereas normally i would have to hold it in for 10 seconds to turn off the computer with that button.

If I don't attempt to access the bios menu, the computer boots up and runs fine.

Specs are...
gigabyte m61-sme-s2 mboard
amd 64 x2 5200+ chip
GeForce 6100 nforce 405 gcard
1GB ddr2 326MHz ram
200W power supply

I have removed the cmos battery for a number of hours to reset bios, and i have tried another battery from a spare desktop i have with no change

I have swapped out the ram with no luck there either

The power supply for the other desktop is 220w, but my computer is micro atx while the donor desktop is mini itx, and the power plug for the motherboard is shorter..... so i haven't tried changing out the power supplies yet because i don't know what will happen with the different length plugs...

I have spent the last two days here and on the net trying to find a solution to this with no joy. The main faults like mine seem to be corrupted bios files or a dead motherboard... I haven't tried updating the bios because firstly I don't know how to do it or where to find the right bios to install... and secondly because everyone seems to say that flashing the bios runs a large risk of stuffing the computer completely....

I am prepared to pull the motherboard etc out for bench testing if that is the only method left for diagnosing this problem..... but again, i don't know what i'm doing there either, so again a risk of stuffing it up completely.....

any ideas/ help/ advice will be most welcome at this stage, even if its just a solution for installing windows 10 on an xp compter without accessing the bios! Thanks....
