I've had 4gb x 2 of patriot viper ddr3 1600 ram and I decided to add more to be at 16gb all together so i got identical ram and decided to add it on. I can boot into windows but sometime after i open an application my computer randomly crashes. If i put just the new ram in i have no crashes but with it mixed it crashes. I have looked on other forums but the solutions on those don't help.

Solution
Mixing memory modules is always risky. There's a chance of inter-module incompatibility (even for same brand and part number of memory) which seems to be the case here.

Try increasing DRAM Voltage by 0.05 V, but don't exceed 1.65 V. If necessary increase memory controller voltage also by 0.005 V. But no guarantee of success.

If still have problems, then -

1) Get another 2 x 4 GB kit and try that with the existing 2 x 4 GB memory. But no guarantee that they will be compatible either. So be prepared to try several other kits until a compatible combination is found.

2) Get a 4 x 4 GB quad channel kit instead. Modules within this kit have been tested for and guaranteed to be compatible.

3) Get a 2 x 8 GB dual channel kit instead. Again...

Third option is recommended because of less load on system (two modules instead of four), and is more reliable.

No disagreement with brispuss.

Will add the suggestions that you: 1) verify that all memory modules are correctly and fully seated, and 2) run some memory diagnostic software.

You can also swap in and out various memory module pairs to see if the problem can be narrowed down to one particular module or slot.

I agree with the 3rd solution up there.

On a sidenote, I've bookmarked this question. There are many others like it(Full Metal Jacket) and are great for adding to answers to RAM questions. People buy 8GB kits knowing they can easily add RAM in the future. That day comes and it doesn't work. Being able to offer web links to articles is one thing but also showing other people's personal experiences makes the answer a bit more well-rounded.

Not sure what that :( in Brispuss's signature is for. 56.6 dial up is blazing fast. I am stuck with a 2400 baud modem.
