Which CPU is better? Athlon II vs Phenom I

Solution
The Phenom X4 is 4 cores at 2.4GHz, and while it has 2MB L3 cache, on the Phenom I it's so slow as to be nearly useless.

The Athlon II is 3 cores at 3.4GHz, and is based on Phenom II which had improved cache architecture, but all the L3 is disabled.

As there's no amount of cache that could make up for the clockspeed difference, the Athlon II would be vastly preferable for gaming. Any newer game that requires 4 cores would find either chip to be too uncomfortably slow anyway. Keep in mind these K10 chips were worse than Core 2 because despite having a FSB which each dual-core die had to communicate over, Core 2 Quad had 12MB of fast L2 cache to compensate for it.
