Is i7 7820X worth it?

I currently have in i7 4790K and am looking to upgrade. I have a budget of around £400-500 for my CPU. The CPU i have in mind is the i7 7820X, this is at the top of my budget (if not higher) and would also require an X299 motherboard (£300) I am looking to get a new motherboard anyway so this isn't really a problem. However, it is a little expensive for a CPU and was wondering if the i7 7820X is worth the upgrade, or if anyone could recommend me another I7 (cheaper) that is not an X299 chipset and is a noticeable upgrade from the 4790K

it totally depends on what you are doing with computer.
gaming only, your CPU is still fine. A 6 cores i7-8700K would be a great gaming CPU and it's much cheaper than what you was aiming at.
It would be great for other things as well.

You haven't even said any reasons for why you need a higher core count processor in the first place, if you're gaming then the 7820X won't even be any faster

youd also be looking at a mobo, ram, heatsink, and windows.
but ya, depending on useage your 4790k is still fine.

You will need $300 just for the X299 motherboard, then $400-$500 more for the CPU, plus new RAM, a frankly ridiculous gaming upgrade for 1-3 more frames/sec at 1080P...

Hey thanks for the reply, although I game at 1440P. I understand the cost just for some few extra FPS but i will be getting a new mobo and RAM anyway (so i can have DDR4). Obviously, the 7820X is very costly, so should I get an 8700K? Or pherhaps i should get a 7700k?

I wouldn't do it. There are plenty of cheaper CPUs that offer similar performance in any area. Gaming, or general use, you should find a less expensive CPU. Or just wait a bit until the price moves down, and this way, you can get its performance for less money.

Making the upgrade even slightly more ridiculous in a 'cost vs. frames/sec gained' perspective

Save perhaps trying to achieve some 144 frames/sec minimums in some newest gee-whiz title that scales super well with more than 8 threads, it'd be very hard to find the 4790K inadequate at anything just yet...but it's your money. (Frankly, I'd 'tough it out' until next year's 8 core 8700K on socket 1161....

And the 8700K is by far a better performer and a better value than the 7820X, especially for gaming, just in case you absolutely can't wait.....

The 8700K just made 7800/7820 somewhat painfully obsolete....
