EaseUS Free Data Recovery Wizard has been stuck at 50634 files scanned for more than an hour, but the blue spinner is still going round and round...is this thing on? Should I start over? I'm using Windows 10 -S trying to recover data on a Hitachi external hard drive...it's HUGE.

I got the "need to format disk" error when I tried to save files to it. Later, Acrobat wouldn't open, and my fax program was wonky...among other things! A system restore to before the last Windows update has solved the C drive issues, but the external drive is a mess.

Right now I'm running a chkdsk to restore files, but there wasn't enough space to save them. Windows is checking something to release the found data to free space...how can there be enough space for that? And it's taking forever. Not hopeful.

Is it trying to save to my C drive? Because the messed-up drive has lots of free space!

I may have to take it to the shop...

Thanks for your help.

That HD is the backup. It's a 500G Hitachi external drive and I also store client files on it - multiple old tax returns, QuickBooks backups, everything. I believe we're going to the shop today. There's no way my PC has room for this.

If that shop also has data recovery techs as sell as computer hardware / software techs working there -- IMO, first enlist the help of data recovery folks and let them work their DR magic as best as the circumstances allow, then IMO, enlist the help of the hw/sw folks to get your computer back into tiptop shape.

Thanks for your input. The "Shop" I use is aces...they do data recovery as well as PC and laptop repair, virus removal, etc. and have been my savior several times over many years.

I believe my computer is running fine now....damn Windows updates!
