Hello.
I'm new here and I hope I can find a solution to my problem. I see many members here are well informed.

I have a Seagate FreeAgent external drive of 500GBs.

Lately (a week or so) i have these problems:

1)When I power on my pc, windows don't recognize the drive or a message pops up that the usb device is not working properly. I unplug the drive from power, plug it again and all's well.
2)When I shut off my pc, while other times the drive shut off automatically, now it continues to be on, and i have to unplug it to shut it off (it doesn't have a power on/off button). (obviously Windows can't communicate with it well to tell it to shut off)
3)Today I have this: Drive shows empty folders or if it shows the files, i cannot open them (it says it cannot find file). I unplug the hard drive , plug it again, and all's well again. After a few minutes, the same.

Does anyone have any idea?
I'm on Windows 7 64bit.
Now, this may be connected, but I'm not sure.
Some days ago I accidentaly removed my usb ports from device properties (so all usb devices didn't work), and then I needed to do a system restore to bring them back.
I'm not sure if the problems started right after that.

By the way, Disk management shows the drive fine.

Update:
I did a virus scan, it didn't find anything.
BUT, whereas before when I plugged in my hard drive I could access the files just for a few minutes and then I couldn't, when i did the scan, i could access them for all the 4 hours it took!
The minute the scan ended, I couldn't access my files again.

i don't know if this says anything.

update 2:
I just saw that in the Devices and printers window, my pc shows a yellow exclamation mark.

But if it's a motherboard problem, why ALL usb devices work properly except that external hard drive?

I had searched beforehand for updated drivers for my motherboard, but the chipset drivers they have in their site, are older than the ones I already have.

I'd appreciate any help. I don't know what to do, and I need to work with that hard drive.
:/

Thank you for your reply.
I have used different USB ports and a new USB cable, yes.
I have a backup of most but not all the files.

I'm starting to think the problem lies in the usb ports.
That exlamation mark was because there were many unknown devices in device manager.
Those devices (around 8) had all to do with this: seehcricd which has to do with Sony Ericsson PC Suite (i had long ago installed this to my pc and now searching the registry there are many instances of seehcricd that have remained).
I downloaded and installed software for this and the exclamation marks were gone but I ended having 11 Sony Ericson Devices!!!

In the photo, these are USB controllers:

after that, I uninstalled again with an uninstallation software hoping to remove all remnants of this Sony device in my registry and deleted SEEHCRI.SYS file from windows/system32, but I ended up with 11 devices with exclamation marks and my mouse not working!! (apparently the Sony device controls the usb port of the mouse too, and by uninstalling its software I uninstalled the driver of that specific port too).
Anyway, i got back to the previous state (with the 11 Sony devices) with a system restore.

I read somewhere that Sony Ericson device takes over the usb ports.
When I didn't have any problem, I only had one such device in device manager, which I saw by accident and started uninstalling usb ports and the problems started (as I said in first post).

So, now it's all down to this I guess:
I think If I'm able to remove these Sony mobile devices MAYBE my external hard drive is fixed. (maybe there is a conflict between them).
But I don't know how.
Should I start a new thread about this?

edit:
I found this which is what I did sort of

but I lose my mouse too in this way.

Update:
Ok, I got rid of all the Sony Ericsson Devices.
But the problem still persists.

Trying to connect my external drive to an old pc with Windows 98, but searching for drivers for mouse and the drive itself.
Hope they get connected so at least to find out if it's the drive's fault or the usb ports' fault.

Can't get the drive to work on the old pc (can't find drivers), so I'm back where I started.
I used a check disc for errors with right click (the minute I plugged in my hard disc because it becomes inaccessible after a few minutes), and it didn't find any error.
Honestly, don't know what else to do. I've searched all over the interenet and I've been up for 2 days.

I don't have a newer system. If I had, I would have tested it there.

I'm so tired by the hours I've spent on this, I think I'll go get a Lacie 1TB tomorrow.
Just have to risk it and think that it's the drive's fault.
Because all other usb devices work perfectly.

I wish I don't have any further problem with the new one, and I'll test this one at Christmas in my sister's laptop.
If it turns out to be good, I'll sell it.

I don't see it as a solution right now hiring a specialist, because he'll need hours and I can buy the new drive with those money I'd pay him.
