Hey guys, hopefully someone here can help me out with this issue. I've been playing (trying to anyhow) Assassins Creed Syndicate and after about 10 minutes or so I notice my frame rate will drop from the 50-60 FPS range to around 20 FPS, so I decided to open up my Radeon Settings utility to check out what might be up. The stock speeds for gaming are 1050 Mhz core clock and 1400 Mhz memory clock. Histogram data shows the memory clock speed works just fine, but the core clock throttles back down to 450 Mhz (non gaming speed). I had considered that it might be overheating and throttling down to save itself, but the max temp it has reached is 55c with fan set manually to run at 100%. This issue persists until I restart the computer entirely, and reoccurs each time I reboot. I started at recommended graphics settings, and each time I've rebooted I scaled the graphics settings back. Overall my system damn near meets the "recommended" specs and surpases the minimum requirements, yet I cannot keep a steady 50-60 fps rate. I'm totally baffled here.

edit: I don't know why it was showing 55 on the histogram earlier. after updating graphics driver to the latest version and trying yet again, i tabbed out as soon as the game slowed down. I peaked out at 101 degrees Celsius. So therein lies the issue indeed it seems. Can't rely on my AC vent to provide a cold air intake now this time of year. Therefore, any recommendations on a nice cooling system for my brand new space heater?

You theoretically don't *have* to replace the card; you just need a better cooling solution. The fans listed above work wonders as for I have used them myself. Quite simple to install and really brings the temps down significantly.

I've heard pretty good things about this setup, here. Sadly; watercooling may not be an option for that card, and well; that card may not be worth all of the money it would take to liquid cool it. But; give that fan a look-see.

Also; is the current fan on the card working properly? That card normally isn't as hot as what you've shown...

My card actually has two fans on it, both of which appear to be functional when I open the case and let it run that way, and its a double slot profile. Although one of the fans does seem a tad wobbly. I have only a single pcie x16 slot - does that heatsink/fan combo require a slot of its own? It looks quite bulky and I'm worried it may not fit in the case, or else the memory modules may prevent it from being used.. Ive seen the temps hit that high before when I was attempting to overclock - which is the reason why I haven't been overclocking with radeon settings software. I don't seem to recall coming across this issue before without overclocking. Although with this being a new build/new case with less air space around the card itself - it may be why I am seeing this now. Ive also turned on high performance power profile in windows as i had read suggested elsewhere here on Tom's Hardware. My PSU is 520 watt max and with that being a 300 watt cooling system it looks like I would have to upgrade PSU as well. I read somewhere else about someone using thermal paste and it decreased their temperatures by about 10-20 degrees Celsius. I'm not too familiar with this stuff, but I'm guessing that person used the paste inbetween the card and a heatsink. Here's what the inside of my case looks like:

Honestly considering the age of that card being about 4 years old and having already been considering an upgrade to the graphics anyhow - I just went and bought the XFX Radeon RX 580 GTS 8 GB which I'm about to install now. Fingers crossed no more overheating. BUUUTT.. if it does, I'm sure to be back asking for more guidance.

The 580 is a great card... Shouldn't have an issue with overheating, however.

Keep me posted.

The new card is working pretty well actually. I had to fight with it for a couple of days to get it working though. Firstly thought it wasn't getting enough power because the fans cut off after a couple seconds at boot up, and I never made it past POST but a couple times and had scrambled colors. So I bought a new PSU with more power and the same issue. Took the card back and got another of the same, figuring I had a bad piece of hardware. Still the same issue. Ended up having to flash BIOS and it finally worked. The box wasn't lying when it said 0 RPM unless under load. I thought it was just their way of saying it was quiet (which it really is). With larger fans running at what I can only assume is lesser RPMs - the card is super quiet and stays cooler even when I've got it overclocked past the "OC+" recommended settings. I'm running the game on Ultra settings and clocking between 45-70 FPS. Mankind Divided clocks a bit lower on the frame rate but didn't seem to overheat as much when I played it on "recommended" or lower settings, not that I can recall at any rate. Rise of the Tomb Raider goes anywhere from 60 - 100+ FPS but I do notice I cant overclock the card as high on that game for some reason.. the driver ends up crashing. Not all games are optimized equally it seems.. but I've been running it stable at 1465 core clock and 2175 memory clock without adjusting any voltages and the fan never goes full speed on it unless I tell it to manually. Overall Id say I'm pleased.
