So as far as I can tell they seem to just be PCI cards that plug into the GPIO port - As there are no X299 motherboards with TB3 onboard yet and none with the right chips to allow them to be enabled down the line (as far as I can tell) I would like the add in card to have as many ports as possible.

The Asus version has one - so any device that does not provide passthrough (memory card readers, 2.5" hard drives etc) will eat up all the ports I have.

So I would much prefer the Gigabyte Alpine Ridge or the Asrock TB3 AIC, both of which give you two ports.

I'm aware the Gigabyte site lists only its own motherboards, which would suggest there is a simple 'no' answer to this, but I have also read on the Tonymacx86 (hackintosh) forums that a dude did manage to get the Asus TB3 card working with a Gigabyte mobo - which makes me want to give it a go. Thoughts?
