Windows restarting even after all components swapped

Hey!
Recently my brother's PC started to crash after about 2-3 hours of using. It's the classic blue screen of death, saying that "your pc ran into a problem and it needs to restart" It tries for a while then says something like "windows failed to start multiple times". If I turn it off then back it on manually it works for another two hours. He asked me to help him, so far I tried the following:

-checking if the cpu is getting too hot (it isn't)
-reinstalling windows 10 on the SSD
-installing windows 10 on the HDD
-checking the drives condition (they're both 100% and if I boot my pc from them, windows runs fine.)
-plugging the drives with different sata cables into different sata ports
-swapping the motherboard
-swapping the RAM
-swapping the CPU
-swapping the power supply in my last desperate attempt :)

At this point, no components are the same in the system as they were when the problem started to occur. But it's still present. I'm out of ideas. Any guesses?

Thanks in advance,
Peter

It's a kinda old system.
intel core quad Q6600 -> intel celeron e1200 (that's what I had laying around here)
2x2 gb of DDR2 ram -> 2x2 gb new sticks purchased
radeon hd6670 -> took it out and used integrated graphics
I can't tell the motherboard's modell at the moment
60gb adata sp900 SSD
a blue 500gb WD hdd
Windows 10 home 64bit

Kinda old?

I would say it's in serious need of upgrade like a new a lot more recent parts etc.

With only 4GB of ram that means Windows is going off the swap file and all sorts of bad things can happen as the system runs out of resources.

Opening a few browser tabs and he is out of memory or close to it depending on what they are.

That thing is really going to struggle.

Thanks, but that isn't an answer to my question. At the moment he doesn't have the money to upgrade so we are just trying to make it work again. Obviously an upgrade is planned, but not right now. And he only uses it for Photoshop, Illustrator and basic web browsing. He never had memory issues.

It's system resource issues if it's crashing every few hours.

No way around that.

Dropping back to Windows 7 or Windows XP might help for now.

Likely Windows 7 as it still has updates etc.

That's interesting... It ran windows 10 fine for two years. Something had to happen.

Windows 10 has changed a lot in the past 2 years with all of the updates.

You said everything is basically different than it was as far as hardware goes, but still LGA 775.

Yes but i used the same one year old installer and it didn't even had the chance to update before crashing. So I'm pretty sure it's not a software issue.

I never said it was a software issue.

Old hardware is old hardware.

A LGA 775 1.6 GHz Celeron and 4GB of DDR2.

I would say upgrade the ram depending on what MB it is to max and maybe put that Quad Core back in if it's compatible.

All right, thanks for making it clear that it's old. :) As I said he never had memory issues and the Q6600 is definitely not as bad that it couldn't run windows 10. The celeron is indeed too weak but it was just for testing if the other cpu was faulty. If the 4 gig of ram wasn't enough, windows would send a notification that it's running out of ram. If the cpu was weak, it would just run slow but wouldn't crash to the point that it can't turn back on.

What do you mean won't turn back on?

Exactly..

That's normally a power issue.

If i press the restart button it's usually just a full black screen or the windows logo with the loading circle frozen. I left it at this state for an hour and nothing happened. Press the restart button again and it does the same. But if i long press the power button and press it again, it will boot up perfectly in 12 seconds.

Check for BIOS updates on the MB, there might be one.

It is a hardware issue though.

Hi,

After all this testing this is most likely not a software issue.
Did you run a memtest on ram ?
What temps are CPU / GPU hitting ?

If the issue happens after more or less 2-3 hour, something is overheating / defective Hard drive / motherboard or power supply.

If the power supply is old and dodgy brand, I would test it with a known working one.

If problem persist: the PSU is ok

Now test the ram, boot one stick at the time or rum memtest86 to rule out memory issues.

Download Hard drive sentinel trial, I personally had 2 adata ssd turn out bad on me for no reason within 2 month. I resold them and got a samsung instead

The other thing is the mobo might have some power regulator problem since it is a 6 year + motherboard.
You will not find any physical problems and the only way to know is to switch with a known working one.

While 4 GB ram and q6600 should run windows 10 slow, it should boot no problem.

I tried to read it but it only flashes up for a split second then it tries to boot back up again. Should i record it to video and freeze the frame?

The actual error code could help narrow down the issue.

-I doubt that both psu-s are bad that I tried. Maybe i'll try it with a different power cord. :)
-I ran memtest86 on both sticks and they were fully ok, that's why I bought a used motherboard in the first place. But anyways, now it has two brand new sticks, they can't be faulty.
-my "checking the drives condition" point meant that i tested them with sentinel and they're 100%. Also I put them into my system and ran windows from them and they were running fine all day.
-and finally the motherboard: I bought it from a working system just to replace the one in the problematic system
-oh, and the cpu is around 38°C idle and 45°C under 100% load

Wow I tried to boot it and it immediately welcomed me with the blue screen staying at 0%. It says stop code: IRQL NOT LESS OR EQAL

Was either PSU NEW?

If not how old?

And yeah they both could be bad due to age etc.

There could indeed be an issue with the MB, as it is old and you got it used.

Anytime you are dealing with older parts there are no guaranties they are really good and or will last.

That's a driver issue normally.

Are you able to capture the technical info at the bottom of that screen?
