Im looking to buy a gtx 1070 / 1080 and i wanted to know if im going to have a problem with them.
i would prefer to go for the 1080 if i can but a 1070 would suffice too.
im currently playing on 1080p resulotion but might upgrade to a better res in the far future.
can also upgrade the power supply if thats an issue too.
Thanks ahead for the help ^_^

my rig:
i5-3470 @ 3.2 MHz
gtx 960
2x 4gb ram gddr3
VS550 — 550 Watt Power Supply

Solution
I would not run either on a low quality VS PSU.

Are you gaming at 1080p 60Hz or 144Hz? For 60Hz the 1070 is plenty and your cpu is ok but for 144Hz you can get either gpu but the 1080 is going to be better but you CPU is not strong enough to hold >100fps in all games, some games it will drop under 60.

you need higher quality

cheap power supplies lie about their rated wattage, or die early/blow up when you push them too hard

700w should be good...a PDF pullup from a GTX 1080 users manual says minimum power supply should be 500w. But to give yourself headroom I would suggest going with that 700w figure. Also, I would suggest getting at least a Gold rated power supply, though I personally have a Platinum (Corsair AX 860 if I remember correctly). Personal opinion:
Never, ever go cheap on a power supply.

Upgrading your PSU to higher wattage and better quality will allow your entire system to be more stable than if it were a lower wattage and lower quality trying to run the system you want to run; therefore the system and the components you put into it will perform steadily and well.

Everyone has their preferences in brand...I would recommend Corsair. The two I've had (including my current one) have served me well for years; even the now-discontinued GS-700 (700w Gaming Series) is still running strong in the computer I've since sold to a friend's nephew that I'd upgraded back around 2007.

A 6GB 1060 would be sufficient for 1080p @ 60Hz.

Your CPU is just fine.

You don't need something like a 700w PSU. Even a 550 or 600 would do, and give you room to go to a 1080 to a 1080ti in the future if you should so choose.

But get a high-quality, reputable one. Others can offer specific brand/model recommendations.
