Hi,

I'm C# programmer and I'm using Xamarin/Android Emulator.
I can get this two cpus with motherboard and ram but the i5 8400 option will be about 120$ cheaper and all parts are new.

What do you think? Do I need i7 5960X or i5 8400 will be enough?

Solution
i'm running the 5960X and have absolutely no issues with it (I use it for a lot of video rendering) but it's still priced approximately $1000 USD which is the price it was released at back in 2014

while the newer 8th gen i7-7820X is also 8 cores, with a higher turbo clock speed (4.30 GHz) with the allowance to run 128 GB of ram, where the 5960X is limited to 64 GB https://ark.intel.com/products/123767/Intel-Core-i7-7820X-X-series-Processor-11M-Cache-up-to-4_30-GHz

and the 7820x is running $575.00 USD https://www.amazon.com/Intel-BX80673I77820X-Core-i7-7820X-Processor/dp/B072NF4BY3/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1508538469&sr=8-1&keywords=intel+core+i7-7820X+processor

and for whatever reason, the X299 motherboards seem to running...

Well depends what you are planning on using it for? Gaming i would suggest the intel core i7 5960X since it can handle it very well but if you buy the i5 it will run everything very well but you will have to upgrade in the future... so i recommend the i7 since you wont have to upgrade anymore for like 2-4 years... ;)

and for whatever reason, the X299 motherboards seem to running considerably cheaper these days than the X99 motherboard for the 5960X
