Is this rig still good for 2017 gaming?

I have a 5 year old computer which consists of
i5 3570k
16 gigs 1600mhz corsair vengeance ram
gtx 1060 6gb edition
evga supernova 650g2 psu
asus p8z 77v-lx mother board

I'm stuck on either selling my gtx 1060 and replacing it with a gtx 1080 or should I just sell the whole pc and upgrade to a current system or just wait a few more years and ride it out with my current spec but with a 1080. (for 4k gaming)

Solution
A better GPU will show more results than a new CPU, especially if you pumping up to 4k which puts way more strain on the GPU than the CPU. If everything is working fine as is I'd just ride it out and save more for a better future build.

For 4k gaming it is perfectly fine other than the GPU. There is currently no single GPU that isn't bottlenecked by 4k at least a little. You may be short a few FPS at 4k versus the fastest CPU's but the 3570k is perfectly capable. If you can ride it out you may just wait until Volta lands next year. The 1080 is ok but it isn't a great 4k card just ok, the 1080 Ti is a pretty good 4k card but I suspect Volta's version of the 1080 should be much better at 4k.

thanks for the link. What about the 1600mhz ddr3 ram? I realize i'd have to upgrade my motherboard to get ddr4 ram or even faster mhz ram. Guess its not worth it?

Nope not worth it.

so even in 2019 my cpu motherboard and ram will be ok for gaming as long as I have the current high end gpu at the time?

Yes it should since you are going to be playing at 4k. There may be some games that will tax your CPU but it should be capable. Since you are moving to 4k the GPU is your main concern today then CPU / motherboard in 1-2 years. Watch this has a 2600k vs 6700k to give you an idea: https://youtu.be/K9EJNa0y524

You didn't say but I assume you have OC'ed your 3570k if not getting it to 4-4.3Ghz will help.
