Hi, I've got an external hard drive that requires external power to run. After about a year of using it the drive will no longer power on, I've tried a different cable etc. but it doesn't work. I know it's a power issue because the light would always show up even if the drive is not connected to the computer.

Anyway I was just wondering if there was any way to recover the data from this drive? Since the last time it powered on all my data was intact, I was hoping maybe I could backup all the data onto a new drive or something.

Solution
There is usually a way to recover data, question is how much are you willing to spend on it.

First thing, remove the drive from the enclosure and see if you can see it connected directly to a computer. If it does not see the files but it does show up in the system and assigns it a drive letter, see if a file recovery program will read anything from it. Recuva is good and has a free version you can run.
