Upgrading PC is like moving house, a pain in the arse but you enjoy the end result..

So basically my GPU has crapped out and i'm hoping to get it RMA'd.

When I find this out I am probably going to look at upgrading my whole PC.

Current build:
i7 2600k
16gb DDR3 @ 2400
R9 390X (Now being RMA'd)

Now my PC is a frankenstein because I have acquired pieces over time.

I'm looking now to upgrade and because my system is pretty old I have a tonne of options.

This is what I was thinking so far (being on a budget of course)

i5 8600k
Asus 1060 6gb OC
and about 16gb of DDR4 Ram.

Is this build even better at all?
It feels like it would be pretty much on par with what I had but just bought into the new generation right?

I also want to look at Ram, is 16gb of ram at 2400/2666MHz much better than 8gb Ram @ 3200MHz?

I stream and people are saying don't get an i5 for streaming but the 8600k has 6 cores so it should be fine right?
I also have a huge Noctua cooler that should sit on the 1151 slot so I should be able to run the CPU pretty hot.
Not going insane on a mother board and was just looking at Prime Z370 Board or similar.

Any help here would be fine and the price range is around what I would like.

AMD was an option but the only thing keeping me from going there is the fact my Noctua cooler wouldn't be able to be used.

ATM I have replaced my 390x with an old 970 for the meantime.

Any ideas/help would be appreciated.

Think that's a good idea. Parts are pretty expensive right now, like the latest Intel cpu's and ddr4 ram. From what i read will Intel maybe releasy new 8 core cpu's as well next year, might be worth waiting for and that gtx 1070,looking at that one review, isn't really bottlenecked by the 2600K especially overclocked.

Don't know what ram you have so maybe can make it run 1866mhz (or maybe even 2133mhz) when overclocking the cpu. It's up to you how much you want to tinker with it. ;)

Make sure...

Might want to google cpu's versus each other since some i've seen say that overclocked the 2600K still rocks for games, the hyper threading helps here. The gpu often stil is the first bottleneck. The ram @2400mhz is also helping.
Don't see any gain in going from a gtx 970/R9 390X to a gtx 1060 price/performance wise.

Bottomline,a still potent gaming machine you have there, but check for yourself.I don't stream so can't comment on that, but the 2600K has it's hyper threading so should help there as well.

Thanks for the reply.
Any good suggestions for CPU compare sites? The ones I have found didn't have data on the i5 8600k yet. I am maxing the CPU on most games I play, GTA 5, PUBG, Holdfast though so was hoping something new Gen would do the same job but at a lesser strain. I haven't really overclocked the CPU but with the cooler I have I should probably look at it. (Will probably do a paste replacement first and clean the dust from the cooler first.

The GPU swap doesn't necessarily need to be better as the 390x is getting RMA'd so it wont cost anything to swap pretty much, but I definitely don't want to go backwards. (8gb down to 6gb worries me a little).

Sorry the current RAM at 2400 was a mistake, I think i'm running at standard 1600 (my bad).

Thanks for the reply again, i'll keep researching (as you do) still have a bit of time up my sleeve.

Yea I looked at those vids.

Didn't expect such good performance....

perhaps there is something limiting my rig from it's full potential, it's weird though as PUBG or GTA5 have the CPU running at 100% but these vids have it doing alot more for less.

Perhaps I look at OC? I'll replace paste and clean it out and crank CPU & RAM up a bit.

Sweet thanks mate, i'm thinking i'll keep what I have at the moment, Asus AI Suite just let me overclock the CPU to 4.9Ghz and seems to be stable.
Will run some more tests and look at doing some different upgrades for the mean time.

Will probably get an overclocked 1070 and an SSD for now.

Make sure the Asus tool doesn't use too much voltage.Look at some tutorials how to overclock via the bios and set your own Vcore.Do some Aida 64 testing or prime 95 (blend wil do fine) to make sure the overclock is stable.

Look at some older reviews about the gtx 1070 and make that decision then. What you have still isn't that bad,but it (gtx 1070) should up the fps pretty good. The ssd i think is always a good choice if not having one.
