Access home network from different location

I'm wondering if there is a way to allow my network to be accessed securely from another location. Let's say I'm away from home and have a show on my computer at home that I'd like to catch up on. Is this possible?

Thanks!

A system used for outside access should be for that specific purpose.
A webserver, a video server, a game server....NOT your daily...

Something like TeamViewer, perhaps.

But be very careful with this.
If you can access it from outside, maybe someone else can as well.

I have Avast Free and the basic Windows Firewall. Would you recommend something else?

The Windows Firewall here does absolutely nothing, because you would be intentionally drilling a hole in that firewall to access it from outside.

Recommendations?
Another PC, with only movie/video/whatever on it, in the DMZ area of your router.
This is walled off from the rest of your LAN.

Hmmm, I do surf on this computer so I'm obviously logged into a few places. Would that be something to avoid doing on a DMZed computer?

A PC inside your LAN is like being inside your house. Have to come in through the locked front door.
Something in the DMZ is like having it out on your front yard. Far, far less secure, but much better access.
