Does the Codec on a Mobo limit audio through the DP?

If a Mobo has a 2.0 Audio codec chip, does that limit the audio channel capability coming through DP or HDMI to 2 channels.

A classic case would be the Audio on the DeskMini H110M by ASRock, which has a 2.0 channel ALC283 audio codec chip. But Anandtech reports that 5.1 is available through HDMI.

But does that make sense, if the Audio is ALC283 2.0 or does the chip only apply to the headset?
I tried contacting ASRock, but they do not give a good answer.
