What cpu would compliment the R9 290 Tri-X by Sapphire?

My mobo is the ASRock Z97 Extreme3 so the cpu must be LGA1150 to be compatible.

I intend to sell the build as a budget gaming pc so the cheaper the better.

Thanks for your time, Looking forward to your answers!

Your GPU is almost equal in performance to a GTX 1060 according to the GPU Heirarchy at Toms.

In such a situation, I would say, it will take advantage of all CPUs except maybe the high end (> R5 1700 and coffee lake i7 'k models), so you can buy any CPU you want and it will still be utilized properly at 1080p. I would suggest you to buy the cheapest CPU that you can find that is supported by your motherboard and it will be fine. Maybe get the cheapest i5?

The purpose of this project is to sell my old parts as a fully working budget gaming build so I dont really want to invest that kind of money into it. The R9 290 is a capable but aging card... whats the cheapest CPU you can think of that will still allow the 290 to perform well?

Thanks!
