I had 4 GB of Kingston 1600 Mhz RAM and I wanted to upgrade to 8 GB. I bought two 4 GB sticks of HP 1600 Mhz RAM. I removed the old Kingston one and insterted the new HP ones. The PC turned on fine. Just to try, I inserted the old Kingston one as well. And my PC is still working. Should I keep using it this way with 12 GB RAM or should I just use the new ones. Is it safe to use two new and one old. The Kingston one is about 2 and a half years old.

Solution
with ram use it for a bit. if your rig seems slow or it locks up or blue screens then remove the ram. for max speed out opf a pc having 4 dimms the same size is what the mb would be looking for. having 3 dimms your running in single channel ram mode.
