I was wondering what to purchase because we all know that this cards go toe to toe against each other but the gtx 1060 is a less electricity consjming card than the rx580 thats why i cant really decide which to choose

Sugggestions of card brands and model are welcome also thanks

How much do you pay for electricity? Unless your rates are pretty high, the power draw difference between the two is probably insignificant. And you can reduce the difference by undervolting the RX 580.

As you said, performance is pretty similar. Some games perform better on one than the other, so you might look to see which performs better in the games you want to play.

If you have any interest in getting an adaptive sync monitor, AMD's freesync is typically a fair bit cheaper option.

In DX12 games, the 580 blows away the 1060. The gap closes in older DX11 games. I think the 580 has a longer life span than the 1060. The question is pricing since miners are still snapping up those 580s and 6GB 1060s and they continue to be overpriced and hard to find in stock.

Does it? Last time I checked it was pretty even, some dx12 games favored the 580, some favored the 1060.

You can scroll through the DX12 benches here from Guru3D on their MSI's version review:

My guess is that Steve Walton's review in your link had some driver issues.

From reviews I've seen of the Nitro+ and other cards RX 580s aren't very good overclockers. The RX 480 didn't overclock particularly well to begin with, and RX 580s are basically 480s that are already overclocked/overvolted. I wouldn't expect much more than a 5% core overclock. You can probably get 10-13% OC on the VRAM.

I didn't really try overclocking myself, as the Nitro+ seems to already be pushed past its optimal frequency (at least with the "Boost" BIOS active, 1411 MHz boost clock), to the point of diminishing returns in terms of performance per watt. I actually decided to go with the "Quiet" BIOS (1340 MHz), and undervolt. I found I could operate at a significantly lower voltage (and therefore lower power) at 1350 MHz than at 1400 MHz, which is only a 3.7% difference in frequency. I don't really game a whole lot these days, so I cared more about efficiency than a small performance bump.
