Computer restarts while playing certain games

I’ve noticed that sometimes on my newly built computer when I play some fairly old games it restarts. The games i’m referring to are Borderlands 1 and Far Cry 3. I’ll be playing them for a little bit of time and the my computer just shuts off. After about 5 seconds it turns back on. I can however play games like Deus Ex Human Revolution without any problem. I’m wondering if it’s because i’m playing these games at 144hz and maybe they weren’t designed to? The only difference between Deus Ex and the other games was I actually had the option to configure what hz I was able to play at. If anyone could help me with this I would really appreciate it.

My specs:
i5 8400

Gigabyte 980ti

Gigabyte z370 motherboard

EVGA 600w power supply

Asus 144hz monitor

2x4GB Kingston hyperx 2666mhz

Go to event viewer, look at timestamps within a few minutes of the restart, and check for critical events. Write out their id and description here.
Have you tried running those games at lower Hz? Just to see if the same thing happens?

I looked through the system logs from yesterday, when it happened, and I believe I may have found the logs that could have been the shut offs.

They all look like this:
Critical 10/22/2017 5:08:14 PM Kernel-Power 41 (63)

I will try running one of them at a lower hz.

41(63) is a hardware failure warning meaning a component or its drivers are acting up. Unfortunately it's non-specific so it's hard to tell which component. This is the general checklist that you should go over:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-us/308cbcb3-46ce-4f74-85f9-d87ce4cef0d6/kernel-power-event-id-41-task-category-63-spontaneous-improper-shutdowns-and-reboots?forum=w7itproperf
but because it happens only on certain games with certain frequency on the monitor, I would think it might be a driver issue/conflict. Try on lower Hz and report what happens.

Yeah thank you. I initially tried lowering the hz on my monitor but I received another crash. I tried it again with v-sync on, which locked the frames into place at 60. I've been playing for 20 minutes so far with no problems so I suppose that was the issue.

Hmm yes but...you should be able to play on 144Hz. If you're at 144, can you turn v-sync on. Does it crash? Or does it have to be at lower refresh rate and v-sync on in order not to crash?
Or are you saying you already tried 144 and v-sync and it's stable now?

I was saying I lowered my monitors refresh rate to 60Hz but nothing else. I was still getting huge fluctuations in frame rate ranging from 120-200 despite my monitor only being at 60Hz. This crashed so I tried it again with v-sync on so it would lock the frame rate at 60. This has been working so far. I will try what you said with locking the frame rate at 144 with v-sync.

I thought everything was fine with this issue but suddenly when I was playing Destiny 2 it occurred. I suppose its not just old games. I believe you may be right about the drivers but I am honestly not sure what to do about it.

Because this seems to be tied to a higher frequency of the monitor, try going on your monitor's support page, see if they're having any drivers for download or any faqs that warn you of issues when running at this frequency. What's your monitor model number?

I have an ASUS MG248Q. I just downloaded the driver and ran borderlands. It crashed again.

Crashing or restarting? Crashing is more driver, restarting is more bad psu.

But, remove display driver with DDU in safe mode, restart, reinstall current driver.

If it’s psu, the reason vsync at 60 isn’t crashing is that the gpu isn’t working as hard and using as much power as when rendering unconstrained.

Yeah it’s restarting not crashing. I’ll try what you said, but i lowered my hz to 120 on destiny and it took longer to restart, but in the end still did.

I just find it so weird that my computer restarts when I play borderlands and Far Cry 3 with unlocked frames but not when I lock them at 60. I can also play destiny (for a little bit) like this as well with the frames locked at 60 and the settings all the way down. But what makes absolutely 0 sense is I can play Rainbow Six Siege at completely high settings at 144hz without it being locked, and my computer will not turn off. I don't know if there is some kind of difference between those games and siege that is causing this, but I would surely like to know. I'll buy another PSU if its needed but i'm not entirely convinced that is whats wrong here. I've read around and there are people with similar issues to mine and they replaced their PSU and it did nothing. I've looked at all of my components readings right before a crash and I can comfortably say that GPU, RAM, and CPU are working just fine. There were no really high temperatures or unusual utilization percentages.

I should also mention that I built this computer two weeks ago, so all of the parts in it are new. I only encountered this problem when i played Borderlands for the first time.
