CPU Needs to be Replaced

As a result of a surge frying my motherboard I now have to upgrade to LGA 1151 which means a new CPU and RAM (Not the best scenario considering I am coming from an i7 4790k). So I am able to afford either an ASrock z370 Extreme4 with an i5 8600k or an ASrock z270 Extreme4 with an i7 7700k, I'm fairly certain that the z270+i7 combo is the better of the two but I would just like to make sure, as I have been wrong about these things in the past.

The PC usage ranges from multiplayer/single player gaming (RTS, RPG, FPS, etc. pretty much any and all genres), I do code with MATLAB for my work running numerical simulations. Other than this it's just downloading, surfing the web and the usual tasks associated with a PC.

I will not be overclocking but I prefer the unlocked chips due to their higher frequency and frequency range. I am also not concerned of being on the bleeding edge of CPU's as I was not planning on changing my i7 4790k for a few years still, it's just unfortunate that I have to.

Solution
The new I5 actually performs quite a bit better than the 7700K in games. No reason to buy last generation CPU now.

And well, the G2 is a good unit but it cannot prevent surges that are not coming from the AC mains.

What is the benefit of the new i5 over a previous generation i7? It has more cores but less threads and lower clock speeds.

The surge came through my ethernet line, I have an EVGA G2, really unfortunate, but apparently the majority of surges that lead to damaging a pc come from the ethernet cable, which I'd never thought of until now, but it makes sense.
