I'm going to use msata primarily for OS, and principle apps, with the traditional 380 gb HDD for data storage.

The OS is about 30 gb, with another 10gb in apps.

I can get either a 128 or 250gb for about the same price.

Is there any downside to using the larger msata? It would (essentially) have a couple hundred gb of unallocated space to start with.

mSATA drive is just a regular sata drive in a different package.
For drive space, there is no..."too much"

And your OS will not stay at "30GB". And don't try to force it to be that way.
OS and all your applications, on the largest SSD your budget allows.
