I'm a little confused about the new intel i7 8700k and i5 8600k line up as they say that the socket is the same as the 7th gen (LGA 1151), However, I've hear that you cannot use motherboards which support the 6th and 7th gen cpus ie the H170 and Z170 boards and need a Z370 board instead.

Can someone clear this up for me?

thanks in advance

Yup, for CoffeLake you need the newest mobos ( the only available now are the Z370 tho...)

For Sky/Kaby you can use either B150...H170...Z270... any of those will work with either CPU, you may need just to update the BIOS beforehand if you're going to put a Kaby on a x1xx(H110 for example) MOBO.

So basically, with Coffee you're stuck, for now, with the premium Z370 MOBO's. If you choose Kaby or Sky(I wouldn't recommend the Sky tbh) you will have a much bigger pool of MOBO's to choose from.

You got it right. Z170/H170/B150 will support 6th gen CPU's and 7th gen CPU's with a newer BIOS version. Z270/H270/B250 will support 6th gen and 7th gen. Z370 even though it is LGA1151 will as far as i'm aware only support coffee lake cpu's as of right now. I have heard there would've been power delivery issues on some z170/z270 boards with coffee lake chips installed, so intel wont allow backwards compatibility to any of them. If there is any truth to that, I don't know

And visiting a place like pcpartpicker I have only seen m-itx Z370 boards.

I do hope that the Z370 motherboards will support Ice Lake CPU but that may be hoping too much. They were kind enough with Skylake and Kaby lake. Still, it's possible. Who doesn't like iced coffee?
