I have a Dell optiplex 745 with 4x 1Gb 2Rx8 PC2 4200u of ram.Is it possible to upgrade to 8,12 or 16gb and what would I need to achieve this. thaks Gilbert

The OptiPlex Intel Chipset Q965 Chipset is year 2006 technology. You neglected to list which of the four models you have.
Refer to the table below in the .pdf for supported memory configuration. Due to its age, I would recommend eBay for possible places to get memory for it.

The Opti 745 unless you have a small one will take 8 GB DDR2-800 RAM. It must be low density RAM. This means chips on both sides of the modules. 2GB modules will be 256x64. Be sure you have the latest BIOS from Dell
Crucial # CT25664AA800 for example.
The Opti 745 is unusual in that it can support Core2Extreme CPUs. QX6700, QX6800 (SLACP is best, base clock 2.93GHz), and an overclock with Throttlestop 6 works also.
No BIOS options though. The QX6700 should go 3.2GHz, and the SLACP can go 3.45GHz
