I have a tb HDD that has my installation of windows on it. The windows i bought was an oem version. The HDD is almost full. I have wanted to get an SSD for awhile and was wondering if i could move windows from my HDD to SSD. Will there be cloning or backups involved at all? if so i do have 1 more spare 1 tb harddrive with only a few games on it so its expendable. im just looking for the easiest solution if there is one. Thank you for help!

OK...just to confirm...your current total used space is below 200GB, and the OS still works properly?

Good.

These cloning steps, exactly like this:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect...

1. What OS is this?
2. How much total used space is on your current HDD?
3. What size is the new SSD?
4. How old is this OS install? When did you last install it?
5. Is this a desktop or laptop?

1. It is windows 10 64bit
2. I have about 960gb give or take of data used so almost the whole drive
3. the SSD will be smaller Most likely 250gb
4. It is about a year and a half old
5. Desktop

Mostly just games so if need be I could delete most of it. Any other programs I have are things like MSI afterburner and such. So not too many very important files. If need be I could delete data down to 200gb but that would be headache. Although if that’s gonna be the easiest route then it can be done.

Games: If Steam games, locate and copy your SteamApps folder off to your other 1TB.
Other stuff...look at Video, downloads folder, etc, etc.

For a 250GB drive, you must have the actual used space to below 200GB.
Then, a clone operation is pretty easy. Detailed steps to follow once you have that size thing conquered.

Done! Thanks for the help on that. I've already tested a few of the files and all seems well.

Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe as necessary.
Delete the original boot partitions, here:
