Need professional advice on a PC build for 4k video production.

So I am in a toss up on a system to build. I have a camera that shoots 4k MP4 H.264 and 4K RAW. I use adobe premiere for all my editing and After effects along with the Element 3D plug in. I also want to start getting into Blender and VFX work. I also dabble in Davinci Resolve.

I am in a tossup on what CPU to start my build with..

Intel 7820x
Intel 7900x
Threadripper 1950x

Cost wise I can build the 7900x and threadripper for almost the same cost with price matching I have done. I hear issues on cooling with the 7900x being a big issue and at most I only want Liquid cooling as water cooling kind of scares me(Thinking a Corsair h105-110i v2)

The Intel 7820x is the cheapest option but leaves little room for upgrades due to low PCI Slots. I am looking for a machine to last me in the long run. Do not want to spend over $2500.

You would probably be just fine with the Ryzen 7 with 8 cores and 16 processing threads. Either setup would be just fine for you as they are high end options. Thoughts on the three builds below?

Good thing is I already have a case, why do you suggest those video cards over a gtx 1080 ti 11gb? What about cooling issues for overclocking? These options will be good for heavy VFX work and 4k editing? projects ranging from 5min to possibly 30min worth of footage. Also need quick rendering.

Your call, however a professional GPU with better driver support and ECC memory may be a more rounded GPU for your needs. The GTX 1080ti is great for After Effects, but Davinci will benefit from the Quadro. Search the forums for the apps you plan to run and see what works, and then what works best to help make your decision


There won't be any cooling issues with the overclocking builds. The Noctua on the Threadripper CPU will hold up just fine, as it would on the 7900x. The H100i GTX would work well on both builds also. With your existing case just make sure you have front / bottom intake fans, and rear / top exhaust fans to move cool around.


The AMD options have 8 CPU cores / 16 processing threads, and the Intel 10 CPU cores / 20 processing threads. That is a lot of CPU processing!

Okay thanks for the help! This is the current case that I have..
Corsair Graphite 760T ATX Full-Tower only has 2 front fans. What you recommend I add? I have never installed extra fans before. I just want something that will last me a while and I can easily upgrade in the future without needing to upgrade everything which is why I am looking at the threadripper as I hear there motherboard may outlive the x299 from intel.
