Then the options are nearly endless for you. Only your budget is your limitation. Intel is right at the threshold of releasing their new line of 8th gen CPU/motherboard line. But they are hard to find in stock at present. AMD has the competitive Ryzen lineup. I have built several of both and have no preference myself.

Forgot to mention i will be upgrading motherboard as well but mainly focusing on gpu and cpu and upgrading ram but that should be easy to do.

And upgrading motherboard and cpu together obviously.

One last thing, should i go for an sli with my 960 or just get a better card. If i were to just do an sli i feel i can get a less powerful cpu and still be able to get good performance for a really low cost upgrade. Also i mainly only play games such as battlefield 1, PUBG so i feel no need for getting a top of the line gpu with a i7 7700k.

SLI is fine using a 2nd GTX 960 if the board you get has at least x8, x8 lanes PCIe slots and is SLI compatible.
I would rather see you get a single GTX 1060 or better. Dual 960s will indeed produce better frame rates that a single 1060, but the small 2GB frame buffer the card has will limit you to 1080p/60hz... and even then there may be some Vram issues. Check out this video and then decide. Watch Paul's whole video.

i’ve decided on a asus strix 1070 and i7 6700 k. I’ll get a new motherboard with my cpu, then new graphics card, memory, as well as a new psu. I already have a water cooling unit so i can overclock the cpu. Just to put some money down and make it a little future proof.
