Solution
Unless you are in an exceptionally noisy environment, there is no benefit to cat6 over cat5e for 1GBase-T.

I have a plain 50' cat5 cable between my PC and my switch. In the past 157 million packets, I still have 0 RX errors.

Price-wise, the cheapest cat5e is about half the price of the cheapest cat6 which is in turn about half the cost of the cheapest cat6a looking at 1000' roll prices.

You didn't mention how long the cable is - that's a big factor and it will probably only make a difference with long cables or in noisy environments.

But why not just buy the best you can? I'm sure there's very little price difference.
