I7-4790 or i5-8400 Which is really worth it for gaming? More threads or more core is better? I wanted to buy something that can last for like 2-4 years. Also ddr4 ram is better than ddr3 so which one is most worth it.

I think I'd put my money on the i5. Firstly that's the newer socket type - and therefore your motherboard will be able to (potentially) support an upgrade in the future. And secondly - it's a 65W processor, meaning your overall system will generate less heat. Cooler systems are always a good idea when you can manage. And lastly - from a pure performance standpoint they're about identical. ;) Go with the i5.

I'd guess that the 8400 is better for gaming as Intel has been claiming that the coffeelake update does much more work per clock cycle. Also in a cores vs threads thing, there is no contest that cores do work and all a thread does is stage it. Not that many games use more than 1-2 cores, but in theory 6 is better than 4.

Really depends on the game.
The 8400's clock speeds can hurt it in some cases. The additional cores do help in some. However it got 2 threads less.

If you're running an 4790 already there's little point in upgrading.
If you're buying new, investing in a 4790 makes no sense.
