I have RAID 1 on my main PC, but my backup PC with some important stuff has no RAID. Can I just add an identical HDD to it and start using RAID right away? I heard somewhere that you can't and you have to use 2 empty drices and format them correctly.

But that leads to another question. What if on my main PC 1 of my HDDs breaks down? I still have the other HDD of the RAID1 setup, but how do I access it? Will it start working as a normal HDD? Will I have to add an ampty HDD to it?

Solution
When a RAID 1 setup detects a faulty disk, it will tell you, and you can swap the other disk into the position of the first one and will let you add in a replacement and swap it. If you want to add a RAID setup to the other system you will need to copy your files out, wipe the disks and setup RAID on it.

Hopefully you know that a RAID 1 setup is not used for backups for more for quick recovery of a system if a drive fails.
