I am building a computer, and have thought up a pretty good build with a

  • *MSI Gaming Pro Carbon Z270
    *Intel Core i5 6400
    *Crucial Technology 16GB 288-Pin DIMM DDR4 (8x2)
I read that Intel Core i5's were only compatible with Z170 chipsets, and the motherboard I am using has a Z270 chipset. I have no idea if the RAM will work either.
Will it work?

Solution
It should work fine. However, why a Z270 mobo for a non K CPU. Just get a B250 mobo and use the money towards better CPU.
It's not true that I5 is only compatible with a Z170 mobo.

Here is the thing

100 series chipset (B150, H170, Z170) - Compatible with all Skylake 6xxx CPUs and after BIOS update Kaby Lake 7xxx CPUs
200 series chipset (B250, H270, Z270) - Compatible with all Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs model name 6xxx and 7xxx
300 series chipset (Z370 and the coming B360 and H370) Compatible with all Coffee Lake CPUs model name 8xxx

Z series can overclock the K CPUs, the others can not.
